The Foot Flashcards
What are the six coria of the foot?
Perioplic ring, coronary band, terminal papillae (distant end of the sensitive laminae), solar corium, sensitive frog, corium of the bulbs
What is the role of the periople?
Connects two dissimilar structures, the hoof wall and the skin of the leg. It also protects the coronary band.
What are the three layers of the hoof wall?
Stratum externum (tectorium) - there are no tubules in this part, it acts as the hoof varnish and only extends a short way down the foot.
Stratum medium - thickest part of the hoof wall, has a flatter and denser tubular structure
Stratum internum - ornately folded innermost part of the wall, composes the horn’s laminae
What is the job of the white line?
To join the sole and the hoof wall. It does not go all the way up the foot but is produced by the terminal papillae at the distal end of the sensitive laminae.
What is the moisture content of the horny sole?
33%
What is another name for the commissures?
Peracuneal sulci
What is the gland that produces fat pockets in the frog?
Merocrine gland
What two basic procedures are involved in hoof growth?
Proliferation - reproduction of cells
Cornification - hardening of cells
