the ferrymans arms Flashcards
“half-pint of Guinness”
” half pint”
suggests lack of time, lack of commitment,
“guinness”
the colour of guinness is black with a white foam, the black being so much bigger than the white shows how infinate death is compared to life
“magnetized”
shows lack of controll over their own self and the direction their life was headed, they were not allowed to opt out of the game of life, they were pulled into it
“drawn, like a moth”
shows how insignificant people really are,
“hummed to itself “
gives the pool tabe human qualities, makes it frightening and disturbed as it is making noise to noone in particular
“ten-minutes to kill”
shows how people discard time, wwe waste what we have so little of, the speaker is headed into a game from which he will never return and he expresses that he doesnt have much concern for the little time he has left and so he fills it with meaningless activities
“Slotting
a coin in the tongue,”
gives the pool table more human features, makes it seem hungry for life
” looked around for a cue”
double meaning, looks around for a stick to play with and an indication of what to do and how to start
“while I stood with my back turned, the balls were deposited”
shows how random life is, he didnt see the balls be deposited and therefore cant know the fate of the game, where they came from or how they ended up there, shows how little we actually know about life
“abrupt intestinal rumble”
makes the table seem hungry, gives it more human features
” dusty green cowl”
cowl is the thing that death wears, and is also situated above the table showing that life is always shadowed by death and that it is inevitable
” physics itself becomes something negotiable”
shows he thinks hes in controll when actually hes playing with chance ans uncontrollable forces
“without breaking the skin of the water”
insinuates the boat is not real, a sort of ghost boat, creates an eery feel
“black as my stout”
links back to the guinness and shows us that it was a referance to death, the sea that the boat is going over is black like the death part of guinness
“somewhere unspeakable”
the place the boat comes fromis a place of death and so it cannot be spoken about because noone returns
“with a nutter’s persistence, to read and re-read the shoreline”
shows how unrelentless death is, it will keep coming back and back and is not avoidable
