Strike at Putilov Engineering Works for higher wages due to inflation
What happened on 23rd February?
International Women’s Day.
- Women join with 100,000 workers on strike and chant “Down with hunger!” and “Bread for the workers!”
How many workers were on strike by 24th February?
200,000
What was the situation like on the 25th February?
- 300,000 workers were on strike
- The police were showing sympathy
- There were no newspapers or public transport
What happened on the 26th February?
Remains of the army tried to control the situation
What happened on the 27th February?
- The Tsar told the Duma to dissolve, but 12 men didn’t
- These 12 men formed a ‘Provisional Committee’
- The PS (Petrograd Soviet) met for the first time
- The PS and Provisional Committee took power
- Businesses were looted
What happened on the 28th February?
The PS said that it wanted to get rid of the old system of government
How was power shifted in early March?
- 2nd: Nicholas abdicated and neither Alexei nor Grand Duke Michael took the throne
- 3rd: The Provisional Committee took control as the PG (Provisional Government)
