the population grew greatly in 1841 areas in ireland such as chonnacht became more densly populated as the population increased people became poorer

as the population grew fathers started subdividing their land between the sons as the farms became smaller the families got poorer

poorer families depended on the potato to live because it was cheap and would grow anywere

ships that people emigrated on they got this name because many people died on the ships due to starvation or disease

1 million people died from disease or starvation and a further million people emigrated

the farm now went to the oldest child so the other children tended to emigrate so they could send money home to their families

many people who lived in irish speaking areas dies or moved away so the number of irish speakers decreased

many irish people blames the british government fro the famine and this lead to many revolutionary movments being set up to try gain independance from britain
