Given “Earl of Essex” this tells us that Henry did not initally plan to fire Cromwell
Why did the Duke of Norfolk want Cromwell fired?
DoN would be closer to the King if Cromwell was gone
DoN was catholic and disliked protestant reforms put in place by Cromwell

Cromwell closed Thetford Priory which was the Norfolk family burial place
-this meant Norfolk had to rebury his families bones: he took this as a personal attack
How did Duke of Norfolk get Cromwell fired?
Used his position as Catherine Howards uncle and Henry’s anger at failure of Cleves marriage to spread rumours that Cromwell was trying to spread protestantism instead of focusing on trying to annul the marriage with Anne
