The Failure Of Chartism Flashcards
Hunger politics
Levels of active support rise and fall alongside economic fortunes. Therefore their members were largely working class who felt the acute sense of despair during economic hardship which mirrored the high parts of Chartists in 1839,42 and 48
Effective leadership
O’Connor was able to attract the support but wasn’t able to maintain a definitive approach in the face of determined opposition. The inability to agree on the best means to proceed the cohesiveness of the move to was undermined
Ambition
In this period the gov. Had only reluctantly granted the vote to a minority of propertied members of society, the idea of democratisation and handing over power to the working is naive. They even doubted themselves over time when they originally wanted to extend the vote to women but withdrew this.
Government legislation
Passed legislation that undermined the Chartists by improving the conditions of those who supported them e.g 1847 Ten Hours Act and the 1846 repeal of the corn laws however it didn’t address the reforms in the people’s charter and reduced the strength of them. However it could be said that the motivation for their charter was to secure better political representation for the working class so on this basis the passage of the acts could be said to have been the advances that the Chartists sough in the long term
