The Eyelid Flashcards
what is the muscle of the external eyelid?
orbicularis oculi
what innervates orbicularis oculi?
CNVII
two parts of orbicularis oculi?
orbital part (screwing eyes shut) palpebral part (gentle closure)
what is the internal eyelid made up of?
fibrous skeleton with superior and inferior tarsus with medial and lateral palpebral ligaments with an orbital septum and tendon of LPS
what does the smooth muscle of LPS do?
opens eyes wider
what gland is within each tarsus?
tarsal glands (meibomian glands)
role of the tarsal glands
secrete lipids that line the eyelid and stop lacrimal fluid from overflowing
where is the lacrimal gland located?
superolaterally
what innervates the lacrimal gland?
CNVII
pathway of the lacrimal apparatus
lacrimal gland passes fluid onto the cornea and it washes over lateral > medial
collects medially at the lacrimal lake
drains through lacrimal puncta into canaliculi through the lacrimal sac into the nasolacrimal duct (inferior nasal meatus)
