Layers of the Eye Flashcards
what is the limbus?
corneoscleral junction
what covers the sclera?
conjunctiva
what is the conjunctival fornix?
junction between the conjunctiva and the lower eyelid
what is the iris and what is its role?
a thin diaphragm that controls the size of the pupil (an opening in the iris)
what covers the iris?
cornea
what are the three layers of the eye?
fibrous (outer layer)
uvea (vascular/middle layer)
retina (photosensitive/inner layer)
what does the fibrous outer layer of the eye consist of?
sclera and cornea
what does the uvea layer consist of?
iris
ciliary body
choroid
what does the retina consist of?
back of the eye with rod and cone cells
what are the two segments of the eye?
anterior segment
posterior segment
where is the anterior segment of the eye?
in front of the lens
what are the two chambers of the anterior segment?
anterior chamber: between cornea and iris
posterior chamber: between iris and suspensory ligaments
where is the posterior segment of the eye?
behind the lens
what does the posterior segment of the eye contain?
vitreous body that secretes vitreous humour that is mainly water with protein (collagen)
what can the collagen do in the posterior segment?
it can clump together to form floaters
