The Eye Flashcards
Conjunctiva
Causes conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Bacterial and viral are contagious
Eyelash or dust is not contagious
Cornea
Transparent
Outer layer of they eye
Sclera
White
Outer layer of the eye
Aqueous humor
O2 and nutrients to cornea
Maintains pressure
Pupil/Iris
Opening/muscle
Lens
Layer outside of eye that helps you see clearly by directing images onto the retina
Vitreous humor
Space filler; clear
Retina
Contains light receptors
Types of receptors
Blind Spot
No receptors
Where the retina meets the optic nerve
Rods
Black and white
Fovea has a lower concentration of receptors
Cones
Color-needs lots of light
Fovea has the highest concentration of receptors
Color Blindness
b-recessive trait
X linked trait so men are more likely to get it because they only get 1 copy
-red/green
-blue/yellow
Color Vision
B-dominate trait-normal color vision
Peripheral vision
Outside of the center of gaze
Vision Disk
Tunnel vision
Loss of peripheral vision
Use that tunnel vision headset
Why can you detect details of written material only when it is close to the center of your vision?
There is the greatest concentration of receptors at the center of vision
Advantages of Binocular vision
It helps with depth perception
What does it mean to have 20/20 eyesight?
What Brittney can dad at 20 feet, Joey can read at 20
What does it mean to have 20/40 eyesight?
What Brittney can read at 20 feet, Joey can read at 40 feet
What does it mean to be nearsighted?
Unable to see things clearly unless they are relatively close to your eyes
What does it mean to be farsighted?
Unable to see things clearly, especially if it is relatively close to your eyes
Path of Light through the eye
Conjunctiva Cornea Sclera Aqueous humor Pupil/iris Lens Vitreous humor Retina Fovea Blind spot
Cataracts
cloudy layer
Light eyes and outside=more likely to get them
Glaucoma
results in blindness if not treated
