The Eye Flashcards
Sclera
White connective tissue
Cornea
Where the light goes through
Retina
Converts light into nerve signals
Rods
Detects black and white
Cones
Detects color in lights
Fovea Centralis
Allows light to focus within eye
Iris
Regulate light that comes into eye
Cillilary Body
Bending and flexing lens for focus
Optic Nerve
Lets eyes send signals to brain
Aqueous humor
Contains nutrients that feed cornea
Vitreous humor
Provides nutrients, allows eye to keep shape
Lens
Absorbs, focuses, directs incoming light
Choroid
Absorbs light - supplies retina with nutrients from the blood
Outside layer
Fibrous layer
Middle layer
Vascular layer
Inside layer
Sensory layer
Eyelid
Protects eye
Tarsal glands
Lubricate eye - edge of eyelid
Ciliary glands
Lubricate eye - between eyelashes
Conjunctiva
Produce lubricant
Lacrimal Apparatus
Produces tears
Eye muscles
Six muscles - produce movement
Accommodation
Bending of lens/ focusing on objects
Emmetropic
Perfect vision
Myopic
Near sighted
Hyperopic
Far sighted
Cataracts
Cloudy film on lens (causes blurry vision)
Glaucoma
Blindness due to increased pressure in eye from aqueous humor, vitreous humor, etc.
How is an image processed in the back of the eye?
Retina
What is a blind spot?
No image detected due to absence of photoceptors
What is the tampetum?
Found in nocturnal animals, allows to collect more light in low light conditions.
