the eye Flashcards
what is the retina
it lies at the back of the eye and contains rods and cones and turns light into electrical signals
what are rods and cones
nerve cells that are sensitive to light
what is the optic nerve
a fibre that connects the eye to the brain
what happens so you can see
- light enters the eye
- the right amount of light needs to enter
- an image needs to be focused on the retina
- light needs to be converted to nerve impulses
how to form an image on the retina
refraction is done by the lens and changing the shape of the lens alters the amount of bending
how does vision work
the lens focus on different objects at different distances by changing focal lengths
what happens to the lens when seeing far away
the lens stretch and become flat because of contracted muscles
what happens to the lens when seeing near
the lens become fat because of the relaxed muscles
what colour to rods see
black and white
what colours do cones see
either red, green or blue
