The Eye Flashcards
Sclera
The white outer layer of the eye - strong and tough so eye doesn’t easily damage
Retina
Contains receptor which send nerve impulses along sensory neurones in the optic nerve to the brain
Cornea
The transparent region of the scera at the front of the eye-transparent to allow light in and concaved so the light rays are reflected and focused on the retina
Pupil
The small hole behind the cornea which allows light to enter the eye
Iris
Muscles that contract and relax to change the size of the pupil to control the amount of light that reaches the retina
Lens
A clear disk that light passes through and changes the direction. Allowing the eye to fine tune and focus light rays to create a clear image on the retina
Suspensory ligaments /ciliary muscles
SL are suspended between the lens and ciliary muscles. When the CL contract or relax causes the SL to pull or loosen to change the shape of the lens. This allows fine focusing of light onto the retina
Position near object
Ciliary muscle - contracts
Suspenteary muscle - loosen
Muscle tension - high
Lens shape - fat
Refraction-strong
Position distant
Ciliary muscles-relax
Suspendsary muscles - tighten
Muscles tension - high
Lens shape - thin
Refraction - slightly
