The Excretory System (liver/skin) Flashcards
what is excretion
removal of waste chemicals produced by body
explain excretion through the liver
breakdown of excess protein which cant be stored
what is deamination in the liver
enzymes in the liver remove the amino group from amino acids
the amino group becomes ammonia and then urea
the remaining amino acids becomes carbohydrate used for energy
what are the two other livery processes
- detoxifies alochols and other drugs
2. hemoglobin in red blood cells are broken down in the liver to produce BILE PIGMENTS which are pooed out
explainexcretion through skin
a protective layer that helps regulate body temp and secretes substances
what does sweat contain
water, urea, NaCl, lactic acid
what are the 4 functions of the urinary system
- excretion of waste
- elimination of foreign substance (urea)
- regulation of water in body (bacteria)
- controls the concentration of compounds in extracellular fluid
what is urea and simply explain how it is excreted
the broken down proteins of food
urea is carried in the bloodstream to the kidney’s where it is filtered and then expelled
what are the 4 factors that make the kidney a good exchange surface
- tubules provide large SA for exchange
- moist surface of glomereulus
- one cell thick
- large capillary network (maintains diffusion graident of substance moving into blood)
