Q

What did Henry find and argue?

A

The book of Leviticus contained a prohibition on a man marrying his brother’s widow. As Catherine had been very briefly married to Henry’s brother Arthur, Henry argued that the papal dispensation issued by Julius II to permit his own marriage to Catherine was invalid.

Q

What did Wolsey do in May 1527?

A

He used his power as personal representative of the Pope to bring Henry before a fake court to “accuse” him of living in sin with his supposed wife, a fault which Henry readily admitted. Catherine refused to accept the court’s verdict and in accordance with canon law (church law) appealed to the Pope.

What did the Pope send after two years of fruitless diplomacy (1527-29)?

A

An envoy (messenger), Cardinal Campeggio, to hear the case along with Wolsey. This hearing opened in London on 15th June 1529, but Campeggio adjourned it on 30th July, thereby sealing Wolsey fate: he had failed to give Henry his annulment.
