What did the Jacobins want?
Louis to be tried and executed, war at home, Paris-based central government, favoured by sans-culottes

No death penalty for Louis, more hesitant, war abroad, decentralisation, suspicious of sans-culottes

Austrians defeated by Dumouriez at Jemappes (Girondin) and French occupied Austrian Netherlands
What happened in September 1792?
Prussians took Verdun, France won at the Battle of Valmy, success on the Rhine
What happened in October 1792?
Prussians retreated from Verdun and Longwy
What did the Girondins win support for?
16th November: made River Scheldt free to Britain and United Provinces, French declared liberty should be established and tyranny overthrown, 19th November: Edict of Fraternity

26th December 1792 - a king couldn’t be accused of treason (this was rejected)
What did the Girondins propose on 27th December 1792?
An ‘appel nominal’ (referendum) which was dismissed by Jacobins who said it would undermine their status as elected
When did the Convention vote on Louis’ fate and what was decided?
15th-17th January 1793: 693 said he was guilty, 0 were against. Referendum rejected 424 to 283. On Louis’ sentence: 361/721 for death without conditions, 286 for exile
