The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect Flashcards
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect doing to the world?
Causing global warming.
Why is the EGE causing global warming?
Abnormally high levels of GHGs produced by humans, trapping radiation from the sun
What is the most important Greenhouse Gas?
CO2. Contributing about 65%
How does global temperature changes (from alteration to the carbon cycle) impact the water cycle?
Greater levels of evapotranspiration. Make summer storms more likely and less rainfall in summer on average. Yet increase the average winter rainfall
What causes the Enhanced greenhouse effect? (4)
Land use change (farming practices), fertilisers, deforestation, urbanisation
How does land use change influence the enhanced greenhouse effect?
1/10th of carbon release annually. Impacts on short term stores in carbon cycle e.g. soil and atmosphere.
E.g. farming practices: In the Amazon rainforest, 70% of deforestation is for cattle farming, which produce methane.
How does deforestation influence the enhanced greenhouse effect?
20% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Becomes a carbon source
How does urbanisation influence the enhanced greenhouse effect?
Replacing countryside with buildings. These areas account for 97% of all human caused global CO2 emissions. Cement production releases CO2
What is rewilding?
Where populated or managed human areas are being reduced or replaced by wildlife
