The Endocrine System + Fight Or Flight Flashcards
What does the endocrine system do?
Maintains levels of hormones using glands
What are hormones?
Chemicals that travel through the blood and affect different organs
What is the pituitary gland?
The “master gland“ – controls when other glands secrete hormones
What is the function of the adrenal gland?
Facilitates the release of adrenaline
What is the function of the testes?
Facilitate the release of testosterone
What is the function of the ovaries?
Facilitate the release of oestrogen and progesterone
What is the function of the pineal gland?
Produces melatonin when it’s dark to induce sleep
Which two systems work together during the fight or flight response?
Endocrine and autonomic nervous system
Fight or flight response: step one
The brain perceives a stressor and signals the adrenal gland to secrete adrenaline into the bloodstream. The sympathetic nervous system is activated.
Fight or flight response: step two
The adrenaline in the bloodstream causes physiological changes necessary for the fight or flight response. (E.g. Increases heart rate, dilates pupils)
Fight or flight response: part three
Once a threat has passed, the parasympathetic nervous system brings the body back to its normal, resting state
