The Endocrine System Flashcards
Name a few hormones regulated by the thyroid and parathyroid
Thyroid- Tridothyronine and thyroxin. Various enzymes that dominate energy metab., and calcitonin- lowers blood calcium
Parathyroid- secretes parathormone(controls phosphate and calcium metab). Without this regulation either end of the spectrum is bad.
Name a few hormones the thymus oversees
Thymosin
Thymopoeitin- activates circulating t-cells in body
Serum thymic factor
Helps with non-antibody immunity
Name some hormones controlled by the pineal gland
Not truly a gland
Translates nerve messages into hormonal output
Melatonin
What does the pancreas produce/secrete
Digestive enzymes
The islets of langerhan control insulin and glucsgons to keep blood sugar levels in check
What are the sex glands and what do the sex glands do?
Testes- produce sperm and testosterone
Ovaries- produce ovum as well as estrogen and progesterone

Six traits of syndrome x
Insulin resistance Glucose intolerance Abnormally high insulin levels High triglyceride levels Low levels of HDL Hypertension
Symptoms of hypoglycemia include?
Fatigue Restlessness/anxiety Headaches/ blurred vision Muscle twitching/tremors Sweaty palms Excessive hunger Abdominal pain Difficulty concentrating Loss of co-ordination Light/noise sensitivity Depression

Endocrine tonic
Pancreas stimulant
Digestive bitter
What number on the glycemic index should individuals with pancreatic conditions stay under?
55
Name the 2 parts of the adrenal glands
The adrenal cortex- produce/ secrete steroidal hormones.
The adrenal medulla-hormones act largely on nervous system
