The Endocrine System Flashcards
1
Q
what is the endocrine system?
A
works alongside nervous system to control vital functions in the body
2
Q
what are the differences between the nervous system and endocrine system?
A
endocrine system:
- acts more slowly than the nervous system
- widespread and powerful effects
- glands in the body produced hormones
3
Q
what are hormones?
A
secreted into the bloodstream and affect any cell in the body that has a receptor for that particular hormone
4
Q
what is the thyroid gland?
A
- produces thyroxine
- affects cells in the heart (increases heart rate)
- increases metabolic rate
- affects growth rates
5
Q
what is the pituitary gland?
A
- located in the brain
- -master gland’
- controls the release of hormones from other endocrine glands in the body
6
Q
what is the process of fight or flight?
A
- when a stressor is perceived
- hypothalamus activates pituitary gland and this triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of ANS
- ANS changes from normal resting state(parasympathetic) to physiologically aroused sympathetic state
7
Q
what was adrenaline?
A
- stress hormone is released by the adrenal medulla (adrenal gland)
- adrenaline triggers physiological changes in the body, which creates the physiological arousal necessary for fight or flight
8
Q
what is meant is immediate and automatic?
A
-
