The Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the function of the pituitary gland?
The ‘master gland’, it releases many hormones associated with the regulation of the endocrine system.
What is the fucntion of endorcrine glands?
Produce hormones and chemical substances that regulate the activity of cells/organs in the body.
What is the function of the adrenal gland?
Facilitates the regulation of adrenaline.
What is the function of the testes?
Production of testosterone (male reproductive hormone).
What is the function of the ovaries?
Facilitate the release of oestrogen.
List the process of the ‘fight-or-flight’ response in the endocrine system.
1) The amygdala associates sensory signals with emotions and sends a ‘distress signal’ to the hypothalamus.
2) The hypothalamus in response to continued threat releases CRH into the bloodstream.
3) The pituitary gland releases ACTH (cortisol) into the bloodstream, and from there to its target sites.
4) The adrenal medulla releases adrenaline into the bloodstream causing physiological changes such as increased heart rate.
