The Cognitive approach Flashcards
What is the main assumption of the cognitive approach?
Behaviour should be studied indirectly by making inferences about behaviour.
What are the two models of the information processing model.
Theoretic model- features relevant to humans.
Computer model- features relevant to computers.
Explain Theoretical models.
Attempt to explain a cognitive process (predict how behaviour occurs).
Explain Computer models.
Cognitive scientists create computer programmes to model human cognitive processes (predicts outcome).
Give an example of a computer model.
Mobile dating apps use algorithms to put potential partners together.
Give an example of a theoretic model.
-Multi Store Model of memory.
-Working Memory model.
Outline the algorithmic process of the cognitive approach.
The information is imputed by the surroundings, the information is dealt with and the behaviour is outputted.
What is a Schema?
Information held by an individual relating to certain circumstances, places, emotions etc.
Outline the emergence of cognitive neuroscience.
Labelled by Miller and Gazznaiga and include techniques such as PET Scans and fMRIs.
Give two advantages of the cognitive approach.
+Techniques such as PET scans and fMRI scans have allowed for research in other areas of psychology e.g. Tulving with types of long term memory.
+Has high practical validity.
PET and fMRI scans and the application of the theory to dating websites.
Give two disadvantages of the cognitive approach.
-It is naive to metaphorically contrast a complex such as the brain to a less complexity such as a computer. Reductionist.
-Most research evidence is conducted in lab experiments, therefore has low ecological validity and low population validity as the results cannot be generalised because they are not reliable.
