the endocrine system Flashcards
what is the endocrine system
it is made up of a large network of glands that produce and secrete hormones that allows cells within a large organism to communicate with one another
what are the major glands in the endocrine system
pancreas, adrenal glands, thyroid, thymus, pineal gland, hypothalamus, pituitary gland and the ovaries and testes PPPATTHOT
what hormone is produced in the thyroid gland
thyroxine
what hormone is produced in the thymus
thymosin stimulates the production of t lymphocytes
what hormone is produced in the adrenal glands
ardenaline and cortisol
what hormone is produced in the ovaries
oestrogen and progesterone
what hormone is produced in the testis
testosterone
what are the two types of hormones
steroid and peptide
what are steroid hormones
they can pass directly across the plasma membrane and attach onto a specific receptor within the cells. They are hydrophobic, aka lipid hormones
what hormones are steroid hormones
testosterone, progesterone and cortisol
what are peptide hormones
amino acid and peptide hormones are hydrophilic and bind to a cell surface receptor
what do hormones do
send a message across the body
