The Endocrine System Flashcards
what hormones does the pancreas release into the digestive system?
insulin & glucagon
What does the Pancreas’ endocrine cells produce?
Islet of Langerhans
What does the Pancreas’ exocrine cells produce?
pancreatic enzymes
what does insulin do?
causes cells to take in glucose to use as energy or store as fat
Diabetes Mellitus (Diabetes)
is due to?
-either the pancreas producing insufficient amounts of insulin
OR
-the body not properly using insulin produced
what hormones does the Thyroid gland produce?
T3 (thyroxine) & T4 (triiodothyronine)
what are the 2 main types of thyroid disease?
hypothyroidism & hyperthyroidism
define hyperthyroidism
the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone so all metabolic processes speed up
define hypothyroidism
the thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient amount of the thyroid hormone and all metabolic processes slow down
where are the adrenal glands located?
on top of each kidney
list the different classifications of the Endocrine System drugs (4)
- insulins
- oral diabetic agents
- thyroid hormones
- glucocorticoids
what does the adrenal cortex secrete?
glucocorticoids (GCs)
why are GCs so important?
- they treat inflammatory conditions
ie: anaphylaxis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, arthritis etc
why are GCs used right after an organ transplant?
to help prevent rejection of the donor organ
what does an Oral Diabetic Agent do?
help control blood glucose levels
