The Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the function of the pituitary gland?
Touted as the ‘master gland’, it releases many glands associated with the regulation of the endocrine system.
What is the function of the adrenal gland?
Facilitates the regulation of adrenaline.
What is the function of the testes?
Production of testosterone (male reproductive hormone).
What is the function of the ovaries?
Facilitate the release of oestrogen.
List the process of the ‘fight-or-flight’ response in the endocrine system (acute stressors)
1) . The SNS triggers the adrenal medulla to release adrenaline.
2) . Adrenaline causes; increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, rapid breathing, releases blood sugar.
3) . The PNS will restore the body to normal functioning when the threat desists.
List the process of the ‘fight-or-flight’ response in the endocrine system (chronic stressors).
1) . The hypothalamus releases CRH in response to the stressor.
2) . CRH causes the pituitary gland to produce and secrete adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ATCH).
3) . ACTH causes the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol.
4) . Cortisol elicits the main effects associated with the fight-or-flight response.
