The Endocrine System Flashcards
The Endocrine system
a collection of glands that secrete chemicals directly into the blood stream
Hormones
The chemicals that glands release into the blood stream
Pituitary Gland
An oval structure int he brain that is about the size of a pea.
often described as the ‘master gland’ because many of the hormones it releases stimulate and regulate the other glands.
It’s connected much more directly to the CNS than other endocrine glands.
Thyroid Gland
Located in the neck.
Releases hormones that control growth and metabolism.
Also affects energy levels and mood.
Adrenal glands
Located above the kidneys.
Secrete adrenaline and other hormones during emergencies.
Pancreas

Produces hormones that control blood-sugar levels.
Gonads
Located in testicles for men and ovaries in females.
