The End of Life Flashcards
‘The Lord God formed man from the dust of the Earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.’ Genesis
This shows that Christians believe that the body and soul are different aspects of the same thing (Dual Aspect Monism).
The soul is the part of a person that can develop a relationship with God- it can be seen as a manifestation of the Holy Spirit.
‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.’ John
This shows how Christians believe that after death, they too will be resurrected as Jesus was.
Jesus died and was resurrected so that humanity can have eternal life in heaven and restore their connection with God.
‘For God so loved the World that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ John
Jesus died and was resurrected so that humanity can have eternal life in heaven and restore their connection with God.
‘He will come in Glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.’ The Nicene Creed
This displays the Christian idea of the Judgement- because God is a judge, he will decide who is ‘worthy’ of eternal life.
‘Our Father who art in heaven…’ The Lord’s Prayer
Many Christians believe that God is in heaven and that Heaven is in fact a place with the presence of God.
‘After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up to heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.’ Mark
Christians also believe that Jesus is in heaven with God (since in the Bible it sates that he ascended into heaven)
‘I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.’ Luke
This shows the fact that many Christians believe that heaven is paradise- there is no unhappiness in heaven . However, many Christians interpret what the Bible says in different ways due to the fact that it’s quite unclear with the descriptions.
‘There will be no more death or crying or pain…’ Revelation
This shows the fact that many Christians believe that heaven is paradise- there is no unhappiness in heaven . However, many Christians interpret what the Bible says in different ways due to the fact that it’s quite unclear with the descriptions.
‘If anyone’s name was not found written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.’ Revelation
In this passage, the Bible is referring to Hell as ‘fire’ and therefore a physical place- although some Christians believe that this view needs to be interpreted.
They will throw them into the fiery furnace where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ Matthew
In this passage the Bible refers to a place of suffering- allowing for some Christians to believe that Hell is a situation or state rather than a physical place.
‘Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.’ Matthew
This can be seen to show that it’s not only Christians who can enter heaven but ‘the righteous’ and the good (those who have lead a good life).
‘Now we know that God’s judgement against those who do those such things is based on truth.’ Romans
Christians believe that God is the judge of all things on Earth- this means that many believe that god will assess them and and decide what will happen to them after they die.
This portrays God as a fair judge, making decisions based on the truth. Therefore, his position as the ultimate judge should earn him respect
‘For he has set a day when he will judge the World with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him [Jesus] from the dead.’ Acts
Christians believe that God is the judge of all things on Earth- this means that many believe that god will assess them and and decide what will happen to them after they die.
This also shows that the day of Judgement can be seen to refer to the resurrection of people’s bodies (as with Jesus) which shows why some Christians will choose to get buried instead of cremated
‘There are also heavenly bodies and there are Earthly bodies;… And just as we have borne the likeness of Earthly man, so shall be bear the likeness of the man from heaven’ Corinthians
Some Bible passages show that people will not need their earthly bodies in Heaven and that it will be your souls or ‘heavenly bodies’ that are needed on the day of Judgement.
