Religion and Science Flashcards
‘Now the Earth was formless and empty… and the spirit of God was hovering over the waters.’ Genesis
In Genesis it describes how God created the Earth and everything in it. This idea does not disprove the idea of the Big Bang, although many do not feel as if the two are ‘compatible’ ideas.
In this story, the Earth was planned and was not created due to chance and random events.
‘Rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’ Genesis
This shows the Christian idea that humans have a duty to be caring and respectful towards animals- stewardship.
God made humans the stewards of his creation and we have a duty of care and should not rule over them. However, this passage does suggest that humans are above animals.
‘Then God said “Let us make man in our image”’ Genesis
This quote also shows the idea that humans are above animals as we were created in the image of God- meaning that they are closer to God than any animal.
‘God…breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being’ Genesis
This quote shows the idea that humans are above animals as we were given souls by God (‘The breath of life’). This means that humans are able to have a personal relationship with God, whereas animals cannot.
‘A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal.’ Proverbs
This shows the Christian idea that humans have a duty to be caring and respectful towards animals- stewardship.
God made humans the stewards of his creation and we have a duty of care and should not rule over them.
‘The Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the World and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it in the waters.’ Psalms
Christians believe that God put humans in charge as stewards of the Earth. This means that humans must look after the Earth but should not dominate or rule over it as it is still God’s creation.
This will mean that many Christians will try and look after the environment from issues such as pollution and global warming.
