the emergence of liberalism Flashcards
liberalism emerged in the 17th century as part of the enlightenment the elightment was an
intellectual movement in Europe based on belief in reason rather than faith scientific enquiry and the possibility for human progress
the enlightenment challenged the extent to which society and politics was dominated by hierarchy and christianity , in particular the idea that
political legitimacy was based on the divine right of monarchs
in the UK this contributed to the glorious revoloution of 1688 , King James II was overthrown by and replaced by William of Orange and Mary his daughter marking a significant shift away from
the divine right and towards constitutional monarchy and parliamentary power
rather than focusing on christianity , liberalism and the enlightenment focused on the
indvidual who had free will and could make progress foe themselves and society
this also built on the reformation and emergence of protestantism ; a version of christianity which was
less focused on hierarchy and more focus on indviduals relationships with god
