progress and optimism Flashcards
progress and an optimistic view of human nature are central to liberal philosophy , this optimism is grounded in the idea that
people , endowed with reason and agency can determine their own futures and actively participate in shaping societal progress
classical liberals in particular hold that society functions as a metriocracy where
individuals can rise based on their abilities and effort regardless of their initial social standing
later classical liberals including Samuel Smiles articulated the concept of self help ;
that indvdiuals have the power and responsibility to improve their own cirmumstances through hard work and perservance , a positive view of human capabilities
liberals believe that when indvdiuals are free to pursue their talents and ambitions not only do they progress personally but they also
contibute to the collective advancement of society , the advancements of knowledge , tech , societal norms are seen as both a product and testament to this indbdiual and collective progress
modern liberals agree with the idea that society should promote a meritocracy but challenge classic liberal views that this is the case under
laissez fair capitalism without the support of an enabling state the help those who are disadvantaged
