Privy Council, Parliament and the local governments

Elizabeth’s closest advisors. She met with them 2-3 times a week

Elected MPs and Lords - Elizabeth only called them 13 times in her whole reign
What were the roles in the Local Government
Lord Lieutenant, Justice of the peace, Parish constable, overseer of the poor
What did a Lord Lieutenant do
Told the Queen what was going on in their area and told the JPs what to do
What did a Justice of the Peace do
Tried people for crimes and decide on punishments
What did a Parish Constable do
Like a Policeman - arrested people
What did an overseer of the poor do
Give out money to those who needed it
What were causes of poverty
population growth, bad harvests, inflation, Fencing off land for sheep, rack renting.
Where did they help the poor
London Hospitals such as St. Thomas’. In Norwich they charged taxes to help the poor
What laws were passed to help the poor
Vagabonds act - punishes people caught begging, Act for the Relief of the poor - helps people find workor built Houses of Correction, Statute of Artificers - helped boys get an apprenticeship
Name some terms of the religious settlement
Religion of England was Protestant, No Puritan ideas, Priests wore Vestments, Churches could have little decoration, Catholics were not to be prosecuted, Bible and Prayer book were in English
What was the Act of Supremacy
Said that everyone who worked for the church had to agree that Elizabeth was head of the church. Only 3% of Priests didn’t agree to this
What was the Act of Uniformity
Made sure all churches were doing the same thing
