The effects of hormone Flashcards
Hormone system
Hormones that are released directly into the bloodstream regulating distant target organs
Gland
A group of cells that make and l/or releases chemicals into the body
Hormone
Chemicals released by glands, that produce an effect in specific target organs
Target organ
An organ that responds to a specific hormone, due to complementary receptors
Name 4 hormones
Insulin
Leptin
Melatonin
Thyroxin
Insulin
Released when blood sugar levels are too high.
The sugar is taken in by liver and muscle cells then stored.
Important that it prevents cell damage after meals are eaten.
Leptin
It’s released when there is a lot of
Fat tissue Body.
It lowers a person’s appetite.
Stops a person from overeating and becoming obese
Melatonin
Released when dark.
Regulates a person’s circadian rhythm
Stops a person from feeling disorientated during the day
Thyroxin
Released when a person is cold.
Increases metabolism
Regulates body temp and metabolism
Target cells in target organ
Target cells can detect the hormone because have a complementary.
Insulin control of blood sugar
Insulin is released in pancreas when blood sugar levels are too high ~its detected by muscles and liver cells~Musles and liver cells take in sugar from the bl99d and convert it to glycogen for storage
