Air Pollution Flashcards
Pollution
The introduction of waste and harmful materials to the environment
Global dimming
Substantial declines in the amount of sun reaching the Earth’s surface.
Carbon neutrality
Is the goal of reducing human caused greenhouse gases
Carbon offsetting
A process which involves reduction of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere in order for other emissions made somewhere else
Carbon capture
The capture of CO² from large point sources like power generation and storing it underground
Renewable
A resource that can be continuously produced without running out.
Sustainable
Meet the need of current generation without preventing the needs of future generations
Solar power is
Advantages are renewable and a disadvantage is an unpredictable energy source
Wind power
Renewable
Unpredictable resource
Tidal
Renewable and predictable
not continuous
Biomass
Renewable
Releases co²
Geothermal
Renewable
Not available everwherw
Hydroelectric
Renewable
Can destroy habitats
Fossil fuels
Instantaneous source of energy but non renewable
Carbon dioxide
The effect of Coventry outside in the atmosphere is global warming due to greenhouse gases But the source is combustion of fossil fuels from vehicles or power stations
Sulfur dioxide
Sulfur dioxide can cause acid rain damaging Welsh acid rain damaging wildlife the source comes from combustion of Foster fuels or volcanic activity
Nitrogen oxide
The effect of this on the atmosphere is global warming, which is sourced from the combustion of fossil fuels and plant fertilisers.
Methane
Global warming sourced from decomposition of landfill
