The Earths Structure🌍🌞🌝 Flashcards
What are collision boundaries?
Are when 2 plates of the same type move towards each other and buckle up creating fold mountains
What are destructive boundaries?
Are when the oceanic plate slides under the continental and the friction melts the rock making molten lava and when the magma reaches the top it forms a volcano
What are constructive boundaries?
Are when two plates move apart from each other and the magma fro underneath rises and forms a volcano
What are conservative boundaries?
Are when two plates slide past each other
What is the difference between a composite volcano and a shield volcano?
A composite volcano produces thick viscous lava and has violent eruptions and a shield volcano produces runny lava and erupts for a long time
What is the difference between a continental plate and an oceanic plate?
An oceanic plate is much more dense and is made of basalt and a continental plate is made from granite and is less dense
What are the problems with living in fold mountain ranges?
- overcrowded with tourists
- potential avalanches destroy homes
- steep ground problem for farmers
How do people use fold mountain areas?
- skiing and leisure
- farming
- mining and logging
How are volcanoes monitored?
Are monitored by volcanologists using equipment such as tilt meters and seismometers to measure the expansion of the lava and if if likely to erupt!!
What are the layers of the earth?
Inner core, outer core, mantle and crust
