The Earths Atmosphere Flashcards
1
Q
Which gases make up the atmosphere and what percentages?
A
Nitrogen = 78% Oxygen = 21% Other = 1% (CO2 0.9% argon 0.1%)
Water vapour can be around 0-5%
2
Q
What is an isothermal layer?
A
Where the temperature remains constant with altitude and thus the temperature lapse rate is 0 degress.
3
Q
What is an inversion?
A
a layer where the temperature increases with altitude
4
Q
What is the average height of the troposphere at the equator? and the poles?
A
16km at the equator
8km at the poles
5
Q
How is a valley inversion formed?
A
LWR radiation on a clear calm, cold night cools the surface. Gravity draws cold air down the slopes and rests below the wamer atmospheric air.
