The earth in the Solar System and its environment Flashcards
What is Earth?
One of the solar bodies that revolves around the sun
Mercury
Nearest to earth and hottest
Mars
Has life
Jupiter
Largest
Pluto
Farthest from earth and coldest of all
Distinction between planet and stars
Planet does not burn naturally
Revolves around the star
Star burns its own fuel for the production of energy
Revolves around another star or galaxy.
Sun
Major source of light and energy for all the planets.
Light takes 8.5 minutes to reach the surface of the earth.
The sun burns its own fuel said to be nuclear fuel in the form of hydrogen.
Diameter of earth
12750 km
Earths Crust
Mantle of rocks.
Heterogeneous in nature.
Types of crust
Thin oceanic crust beneath the ocean basins
Thicker continental crust that is the feature of the continents.
Earths Mantle
Most of earths mass is concentrated.
Consists of upper and lower mantle separated by transition zone
Temperature of mantle
Lowest below the crust.
Highest where the mantle material is in contact with the heat producing core.
Earths Core
It constitutes the center of the earth
Source of internal heat which is the outcome of radioactive materials which proceeds with release of heat energy.
Types of Core
Inner and outer core.
Inner: solid even though its temperature is higher than the outer core.
Outer: Iron and nickel alloy. It is a liquid because temperature there is adequate to melt the iron-nickel alloy.
Chemical composition
Made of iron-magnesium silicates.
Surrounds the core and makes up the bulk of the earth
