The Earth And Plate Tectonics Flashcards
Name 3 layers of the Earth
The core , the mantle & the crust
What does the term ‘molten’ mean?
Molten describes an object that’s reduced to liquid form by heating
What is magma?
Magma is a mixture of molten and semi-molten rock found beneath the surface of the Earth
What is continental drift?
The gradual movement of the continents across the earths surface through geological time.
What are convection currents?
Convection currents are the result of different heating. Lighter, less dense, warm material rises while heavier, cool material sinks. It is this movement that creates circulation patterns known as convection currents.
Name two separating plates
North American plates & Eurasian plates
Name two colliding plates
Name two plates that are moving side by side
On what plate is Ireland found.
Name 3 types of plate boundaries
At which type of boundary do fold mountains form?
What is a mid ocean ridge?
At which plate boundary do volcanoes form?
At which plate boundary do earthquakes occur?
What is the constructive plate boundary?
A constructive boundary is when the plates pull apart, landforms at constructive boundaries are; volcanoes, volcanic islands & mid ocean ridges
