The Earth Flashcards
1
Q
Name the three layers of the earth and some information about each.
A
- Crust - thin and surrounded by atmosphere
- Mantle - all properties of a solid, but, it can flow very slowly. Within radioactive decay takes place, which produces heat , caused by a convection current.
- CORE - Iron and Nickel
2
Q
Which layer are the tectonic plates on?
A
Crust and upper part of mantle is cracked.
3
Q
What causes the plates to drift?
A
the convection currents in the mantle.
4
Q
In a year how much do they move by?
A
few cm per year
5
Q
what occur between two tectonic plates?
A
volcanoes and Earthquakes
6
Q
What are the clues for volcanoes erupting?
A
molten rock rises up into chambers near the surface, the ground bulges a little which can cause mini earthquakes
7
Q
In the simplest terms what does phase 1 consist of?
A
- Earth was molten
- It cooled down = thin crust formed.
- Volcanoes gave out gases –> oceans and atmosphere formed
- lots of CO(2) and hardly any O
- Water vapor (condensed = oceans) + methane + ammonia
8
Q
Phase 2?
A
- Green plant and algae -> absorbed some CO(2) + Produced 0(2) by photosynthesis
- They died + buried under sediment.
- Hydrocarbons and carbon locked up as insoluble carbonates and fossil fuels
9
Q
Phase 3?
A
- oxygen builds up which created the Ozone layer, which blocks harmful rays.
- we evolved
- virtually no carbon dioxide left
10
Q
Problems of burning fossil fuels
A
global warming
and makes oceans acidic
