The Ear and The Skin Flashcards
how do ears help you here
sound hits eardrum-vibration causes bones attached to the eardrum to vribrate, amplify sound-vibration transmits to cochela-vibration causes waves to the cochela which bends the hair-stimulates nerves in hairs-nerves send signals to brain.
what is the function of ears
hearing and balance
how do ears help with balance
- sensed by fluid filled semicircular canals, lined with mechanoreceptors
- arranged in different angles lets brain know head movement and different things
what is the function of skin
detects difference in external environment with free nerves (e.g heat, pain, pressure, movement of hairs, stretching of skin or brain.)
what is adaptation
the receptors or brain ignore prolong stimulation(e.g strong smells)
what is the cochlea
the fluid filled apparatus
what is the mechanoreceptors
hair like cells in the cochlea
What are the skin receptors and what are their functions
Free nerve ending: pain and temperate Meeker disc: light touch Krause end blubs: touch Meissner's corpuscles: touch Pacinian corpuscles: pressure Riffini endings: pressure stretch
Types of receptors and function
Mechanoreceptor:touch
Thermoreceptor: temperature
Stretch receptor: stretch
Pain receptor: pain
