The Dynamic Earth Flashcards
Convection currents
Keeps the magma moving, the hot less dense magma rises while the cool more dense magma sinks.
Converging plates
Plates that collide with the each other.
Subduction zones
When one plate is made from oceanic crust and the other is made from continental crust and the oceanic plate sinks underneath the continental as it is heavier.
Folding
Layers of rock bend and crumple without breaking.
Difference between anticlines and synclines.
Anticlines are folds that bend upwards. Synclines are folds that bend downwards
Difference between magma and lava
Magma is molten rock stored in the earths crust while lava is magma that has spilled out onto the the earths surface.
Deep ocean trenches
Form along subduction zones.
What is some evidence for plate tectonics?
Chains of volcanoes and regions of high seismic activities.
Increasing height of mountain ranges.
The movement of continents.
Rocks further away from mid lines of mid ocean ridges are older than the closer ones.
What is a hydrocarbon?
An organic compound made of hydrogen sulfide and carbons.
What are some greenhouse gases?
Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen oxide.
Asthenosphere
Layer of magma that the plates of the lithosphere float on.
