Summary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb
In 1941, Roosevelt(The American president) agreed to make the atomic bomb. On the 6th August 1945, an American B29 bomber dropped the worlds first atomic bomb called ‘little boy’ over the Japanese city called Hiroshima. The bomb wiped out 90% of the city and killed 80,000 people ; more people died later due to radiation exposure. 3 days later a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, the bomb was called ‘fat man’ and killed 40,000 people.
Why America did have the right to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki
- Japan were not innocent, in 1941 they carried out a surprise attack on Pearl Harbour.
- Japanese were making their own atomic bomb, they would have used it on the USA if they had perfected it in time.

- The USSR were worried America had more atomic bombs and were going to drop it on the USSR.

Why America didn’t have the right to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki
- Dropping the atomic bomb was morally wrong, it went against the Geneva convention which said which said bombs should not be dropped in civilian areas.
- Japan was about to surrender. 60+ of Japans cities had be destroyed by conventional bombing. It was only a matter of time before Japan had lost the war and surrendered. USA could have waited for that to happen.
