The drainage basin hydrological cycle Flashcards
What is a drainage basin?
An area of land which is drained by a river and its tributaries.
What is a watershed?
The boundary of the drainage basin.
What is Melt Water?
Melt water is the water the melts and runs along the surface of mountains down into the river eventually.
What is the water that is stored in the soil called?
It is called soil water storage.
What is the water that is stored in lakes and reservoirs on the earth’s surface?
Surface water storage.
What is infiltration?
Infiltration is the process of water soaking in through the earth’s surface.
What is quick through flow?
If there’s always natural pipes carried into landscape. Pipe-flow
What is slow through flow?
If there’s no natural pipes so water has to make its own way through.
What is deep percolation?
The deep penetration of water through the earth’s surface.
What is surface runoff or overland flow?
Surface runoff or overland flow is the flow of water over the land.
What is ground water flow?
Ground water flow is the flow of water through the ground.
What is channel flow?
Channel flow is the flowing of water through a river channel.
What is Channel Storage?
The water that is stored in a channel.
What is the process that occurs in plants whereby they absorb water into their system?
Active transport.
What is direct channel precipitation?
It is the direct falling of precipitation into a river channel.
