The Diversity of Life Flashcards
What is evolution?
Is where you have organisms that vary, pass on their characteristics and survive differently through generations.
What do you require for natural selection?
Variation- Everyone is different
Inheritance- Parents pass on genetic traits to their offspring
Selection- Some variants reproduce more than others
Time- successful variations accumulate over many generations.
What is so significant about a phylogenetic tree?
This is a diagram that represents evolutionary relationships amount organisms. The pattern of branching in a phylogenetic tree reflects how species or other groups evolved by from a series of common ancestors. With the wide range of organisms we can put all known life on earth into three domains.
What are the three domains called?
Bacteria
Eukarya
Archaea
What is endosymbiosis theory?
Is the theory how Eukarya cells are derived from bacteria. As many Eukarya have taken up bacteria to form symbiosis with bacteria to produce mitochondrial and chloroplast.
Bacteria that used oxygen as their own energy evolved into mitochondrial.
The Bacteria that used sunglight energy are their own energy evolved into chloroplast.
What is symbiosis?
Symbiosis is any type of a close and long-term biological interaction between two different biological organisms
What are prokaryotes and Eukaryotes?
Prokaryotes have No nucleus and no membrane- bound organelles. i.e. Archaea and bacteria
Eukaryotes are the opposite i.e. fungi, animals, plants and protist.
What is mutualism
A symbiosis where both organisms benefit.
What is the cell theory?
The cell is the smallest living unit in all organisms.
All living things are made of cells.
All cells come from pre exisiting cells.
