The diversity of life Flashcards
Learn terms
Unity
Two species that share similar traits because they have descended from a common ancestor.
Diversity
Two different species that have diverged from a common ancestor.
Prokaryotic
A cell lacking a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles. (bacteria and archaea)
Eukaryotic
A cell with a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles. (protists, plants, fungi and animals)
Archaea
One of two prokaryotic domains, the other being bacteria.
Eukarya
Domain that includes all eukaryotic organisms.
Protists
Term applied to any eukaryote that is not a plant, animal or fungus. Most protists are unicellular.
Natural selection
Individuals that have better adapted traits to the environment tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than those with less suited traits.
Adaptation
Inherited characteristic of an organism that enhances its survival and reproduction in a specific environment.
Phospholipids
A lipid made up of glycerol joined to two fatty acids and a phosphate group. Form bilayers that function as biological membranes. (non-polar and polar ends).
