-The League sent British politician Lord Lytton to investigate.

-It took nearly a year for him to write his report, by which time Japan has invaded Manchuria.

-Lytton concluded that Japan was in the wrong but, Japan had left the League and went on to occupy more Chinese territory from 1933 to 1937.

-Rebuilding the Roman Empire.

-There were lots of natural resources.

-1896, Italy tried to invade Abyssinia but was defeated, Mussolini wanted revenge.

-He was confident that League would not stop him as they could not stop him during the Corfu crisis in 1923.

A

-Britain and France did not close Suez Canal, it would have made it difficult for Mussolini and his troops to enter in the first place.

Why did the League fail to avert war in 1939?

A

-People turned to extremism and militarism in the hope of rebuilding their countries’ economies. This led to countries being less likely to support the League’s aims of cooperation and peace.

-Hitler and Mussolini promised glory for their countries by waging war.

-In the climate consisting of Hitler and Mussolini ready to deploy armies were necessary (with the League of Nations unable to as they do not have an army of their own), war became more and more likely and the League was powerless to stop it.
