The Digestive System and Enzymes Flashcards
What enzyme breaks down carbohydrates?
Carbohydrases
What enzyme breaks down Proteins
Proteases
What enzyme breaks down Fats
Lipases
Where is Bile Made?
Liver
Where is Bile Stored?
Gall Bladder
Where does Bile go?
Secreted down the bile duct to the small intensity.
What does Bile do?
Helps break down fat by emulsifying fats. Break them down into droplets. Bigger surface area for lipase to act on.
What is the process of the Digestive System?
Mouth, Stomach, Pancreas, Small Intestine, Large Intestine
What does the Mouth do?
Breaks Up Food by Chewing. Carbohydrase in Saliva Breaks Down Starch
What does the Stomach do?
Acid in the stomach kills bacteria. Stomach produces Protease and Lipase enzymes
What does the Pancreas do?
Produces Protease, Lipase and Carbohydrase enzymes. These enzymes act in the small intestine.
What does the Small Intestine do?
Digestion is completed by Carbohydrase enzymes in the small intestine. The food is absorbed in the second half of the Small Intestine
What does Large Intestine do?
Water from the digestive juices is re-absorbed into the blood

What is the movement of food called?
peristalsis
