What does the mouth do?
Crushes food by teeth( mechanical digestion )
Enzymes in salvia break down the food( chemical digestion)
The tongue helps move the food around
What is the epiglottis
The epiglottis is a piece of tissue that goes flat when food is swallowed
What is the œsophages
The oesophogus is the tube that leads from your mouth to your stomach. It moves the food by using peristalsis, the contraction of circular muscles called sphincters.
What is the stomach
The stomach is a bag (approx 2L) that mixes and churns food with acidic gastric juices.
What is the liver
The liver produces bile, it then gets stored in the gall bladder before going into the small intestine. Bile is an alkaline and an emulsifier and contains enzymes
What is an alkaline
The opposite of an acid
What is the pancreas?
The pancreas produces insulin. Pancreatic juices that secrete in the small intestine
What’s the small intestine
It’s where the absorption of nutrients occurs. Its lined with villi to increase surface area.
Large intestine purpose?
When food reaches this point it’s pretty much water and fibre. The large intestine makes shit
What’s the rectum
It’s where the shit is stored
What’s the anus for
