Digestion Pathway
Oral Cavity-> Pharynx-> Esophagus-> Stomach-> Small Intestine [Duodenum, Jejunem, Ileum]-> Large Intestine-> Rectum-> Anus
Mechanical Digestion
The physical breakdown of large food particles into smaller food particles.
Ex. Chewing/Mastication
Chemical Digestion
The enzymatic cleavage of chemical bonds.
Ex.
- cleavage of peptide bonds in proteins
- cleavage of glycosidic bonds in starches
Intracellular Digestion
The oxidation of glucose and fatty acids to create energy.
Extracellular Digestion
Occurs in the lumen of the alimentary canal.
Four Accessory Organs of Digestion
Salivary glands, pancreas, liver, gallbladder
Enteric Nervous System
Wall of the alimentary canal and controls peristalsis. Activity is up-regulated by the parasympathetic nervous system and down-regulated by the sympathetic nervous system.
