The digestive system Flashcards
roles/functions
roles of the digestive system (6)
Ingestion of food and water
Transportation of food and water
Mechanical digestion of food
Chemical digestion of food
Absorption of digested food, and water into blood and lymph
Elimination of material that is not absorbed
what is the alimentary canal
Continuous tube that runs from mouth to anus
THE role of the digestive system
Body cells require nutrients (simple sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, water) to function normally
Role of the digestive system is to supply nutrients from food to cells of body
what is ingestion
consumption of food (and other substances i.e. liquids and medicines) through the mouth (orally)
what is transport
movement of food through the digestive system.
Each organ of the alimentary canal has features to assist in transporting the food and water from the mouth to the anus
what is mechanical digestion
physical breakdown of food into smaller particles (e.g. crushing and grinding).
what is chemical digestion and what does it need
breakdown of food due to chemical reactions
Involves enzymes.
Needs cells that produce enzymes and a large surface area for the enzymes to act on the food.
what is absorption
movement of digested nutrients from the cells of the digestive system into the blood and lymph vessels for transport to organs and tissues
what is elimination
removal of indigestible material, bacteria and bile pigments from the digestive system. Also called defecation
