The Digestive System Flashcards
What are the two functions of the human digestive system?
- Break down complex food structures
- provides the very large surface area for maximum absorption of food
DS : what is the function of the mouth
Begins the digestion on carbohydrates.
Where are the salivary glands
In the back of the mouth / throat
What is function of the stomach
Begins the digestion of protein; small molecules such as alcohol absorbed
What is the function of Small intestine - Duodenum?
Continues the digestion of carbohydrate and protein; begins the digestion of lipids
What is the function of Small intestine - Ileum
Completes the digestion of carbohydrates and proteins into single sugars and amino acids; absorption of single sugars, amino acids and fatty acids and glycerol
What is the function of the Large intestine
Absorption of water; egestion of undigested food
What do digestive enzymes do?
used to break down food in the gut into small, soluble molecules that can be absorbed through the gut wall.
What is the inside of the small intestine lined with?
villi
What is the purpose of villi
Provide a larger surface area for food absorption
What is a microvilli
projections that cover each villus.
What are inside the villus?
Blood capillaries
