  3. Absorption: Digested food passes into the bloodstream.
  4. Assimilation: Using the food in the cells of the body.

  1. Taking large pieces of food and breaking them down into smaller pieces

Chemical digestion

A
  1. Involves the use of chemical called enzymes to break down food.
  2. Enzymes are chemicals that speed up reactions without being used up in the reaction.
  3. How enzymes work: Enzymes act on a substrate and breaks it down into products e.g.: substrate = starch, enzymes = amylase (saliva),a product = maltose (sugar).
  4. Amylase in mouth.
  5. Enzymes in the stomach.
  6. Most chemical digestion happens in small intestine.
  7. Biles made in liver to break down fats.
    Pancreas makes digestive juices which contains enzymes.
